|SANTA FE, NM – Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
This summer, Shakespeare in the Garden
brings perhaps one of the most well-known Shakespeare plays to life: Romeo & Juliet.
Produced by Santa Fe Classic Theater, in partnership with the Shakespeare Guild, and directed by Patrick Briggs, this year’s production runs May 31-June 9 at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden.
Director Patrick Briggs says, “[Romeo & Juliet is] one of my favorites; it has this visceral, big emotion that can hardly be contained.” What better venue to allow that emotion to flourish than an outdoor space? Performances are held in the Berlin Gathering Place amphitheater in the Botanical Garden at Museum Hill, with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as the play’s ultimate backdrop.
Each summer, the Botanical Garden at Museum Hill is transformed into an art and performance venue, hosting monthly concerts, an art exhibition, and incredible performances of Shakespeare. The intersection of beautiful botanicals and thought-provoking art is a priority for the Santa Fe Botanical Garden, to not only provide a beautiful backdrop for the arts, but also to the local talent we have in Santa Fe and the state.
Past productions of Shakespeare in the Garden have included The Tempest (2017) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2018). This year’s production is moved from August to June to avoid the rains of the monsoon season, which canceled 4 out of 14 performances in 2018.
