Join Dr. Olivia Carril in learning how to identify some of the more common pollinators seen in Northern New Mexico. During this two hour workshop participants will walk through the Botanical Garden observing bees in action, and spend time in the Pavilion looking at these creatures up close with microscopes and high resolution images.
With over 1,000 species, New Mexico is one of the most diverse states for bees in the U.S. As the primary pollinators of New Mexico’s many native plants, learning to recognize them can be important not only for successful gardening, but also for a deeper understanding of the ecological connections playing out in our backyards.
Dr. Olivia Carril has been studying native bees for nearly 30 years, conducting research throughout the West. She completed a Masters degree in 2006 at Utah State University, establishing a long term ecological study of the environmental factors influencing bee diversity on the Colorado Plateau. In 2013 she received her PhD from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, studying a specialist bee and its host flowers. Since then she has written three books, The Bees In Your Backyard: A Guide To North America’s Bees, Common Bees of Eastern North America, and Common Bees of Western North America.
