What do you do when trees need final placement in the botanical garden in Santa Fe, and the landscape architect is in Toronto??

You “land-Skype” at the site.

Earlier today our construction and horticulture team held a video call with W. Gary Smith using an ipad and some creative tree stand-ins. While everyone has been looking at the planting plan maps for months, the final placement of the trees requires looking at the ground space with the new walls, pathways, contours of the land, and views of the surroundings in context. Discussion between all involves asking questions like “How big will this grow?” and “Will this obstruct a view?” or “Will this tree grow roots too close to the wall or path?”

Thanks to all the crew who were stand-in for trees and moved 2 feet forward, 5 feet to the east, and waved their arms so Gary could see their position in respect to the rest of the garden. The first trees arrive NEXT WEEK!!
